Cats & Other Pets
Several things should be taken into consideration when bringing a cat or kitten into a home with existing pets.

Cats and Dogs

Various reactions are to be expected when bring a cat into the home when you already have a dog or vice versa.  Pets tend to be territorial and many times the pet that you had first may try to claim dominion.  Just like children they will both try to demand your undivided attention.  My sister has had a cat for over 7 years and recently bought two lap dogs.  The cat is bigger than both of them so she wouldn’t allow them to be in the same room unattended for the first couple of weeks.  Surprisingly they get along great.  The cat has never hissed at the pups and she actually playfully runs from the dogs.  But again every situation is different so use caution as you don’t want any of your pets to injure the others.

Its best to allow the pets to greet each other on their own instead of forcing a meet and greet.  Other things you may want to consider is separate feeding and grooming areas, especially at first.  Dogs and cats are very different especially when it comes to grooming and bathroom breaks.  Take these into consideration and if you have the space us it wisely.

Cats and Smaller Animals

Be sure to keep in mind that cats are carnivores.  So if you have birds or hamsters or any other small pets, they may appear to be lunch to your cat.  And remember that cats can get just about anywhere they please, so trying to keep smaller pets out of your cats reach can be difficult.  We’ve all seen the old Tom and Jerry cartoons and laughed at the different tactics Tom would use to to try and catch Jerry.  Unfortunately your daughter probably want find it so funny if her bird gets eaten by the new cat, so take this into consideration when bringing a cat into a home with existing smaller pets.
